The United States papermaking industry will be the biggest consumer of renewable energy in 20 years, according to a report released on Wednesday.
The Associated Press has a graphic of how the country’s electricity will be generated from renewable sources by 2050.
The AP says that the United States is already the world’s largest producer of paper and that China will overtake the United Kingdom as the biggest paper consumer in the next 20 years.
This means that it will be possible for the United Nations to reduce the carbon intensity of the global economy.
A global paper industry has existed for a century and now has about 2.7 billion people working in papermaking.
That means that about two-thirds of the world population currently has access to the paper industry, the AP says.
The world’s papermaking jobs have doubled in the past decade, from 9.5 million in 2008 to 22 million in 2020.
